The HFMP-230 is an elite-tier HF Multi-Polarized Omnidirectional Broadband Passive Receiving Antenna specifically engineered for high-stakes spectrum monitoring, SIGINT, and surveillance across the 1.5–30 MHz frequency range. By integrating a vertical monopole with two orthogonal horizontal dipoles, this antenna provides true polarization diversity, allowing for the simultaneous capture of ground-wave and sky-wave signals regardless of ionospheric rotation. It is the definitive passive solution for military and government installations requiring 24/7 situational awareness without the maintenance overhead of active circuitry.

Design: Triple-Polarization Monitoring Mastery

The HFMP-230 is designed to solve the "fading" problem inherent in HF signal reception. As signals reflect off the ionosphere, their polarization rotates unpredictably.

  • Polarization Diversity: With three independent ports (V1, H1, H2), the HFMP-230 captures the vertical component (ideal for ground waves and long-range sky-waves) and both horizontal components (ideal for NVIS and short-range sky-waves) simultaneously.
  • Automatic Spectrum Access: This is a fully passive, "no-tuner" design. It requires no power supply and no ATU, delivering a stable 2.5:1 VSWR across the entire band. It is optimized for high-speed receivers and digital signal processors that need instant access to the full HF spectrum.

Construction: MIL-SPEC Environmental Hardening

Built for strategic longevity, the HFMP-230 is constructed from 6063T6 architectural anodized aluminum alloy. To survive the most aggressive coastal or desert environments, all metal surfaces are finished with a specialized epoxy-based powder coating in Olive Green. The internal cable routing keeps the feeders protected inside the mast, while all external hardware is made of Type 316 marine-grade stainless steel. The antenna stands at an overall height of 11 meters (36 feet), supported by high-strength Delrin and Teflon insulators.

Reliability: Strategic Surveillance Resilience

Fully compliant with MIL-STD-810G, the HFMP-230 is certified to survive extreme high/low temperatures, salt fog, fungus, and high-intensity vibration. It is completely D.C. grounded, providing an integrated discharge path for lightning protection and significantly reducing the local noise floor—a critical requirement for high-sensitivity surveillance. The system is designed for rapid deployment, allowing a team of two technicians to complete a full rooftop or ground-based installation in under one hour.

SIGINT Integration Guide: Mode Identification & Signal Triangulation

In Signals Intelligence (SIGINT) and high-level spectrum monitoring, the HFMP-230 serves as more than just a collector; it acts as a diagnostic tool. By analyzing the relative signal strength across its three ports (V1, H1, H2), operators can determine the propagation mode of an intercepted signal, which is a critical step in identifying the transmitter's distance and location.

1. Propagation Mode Identification

The ionosphere is dynamic, and different signal types arrive at the antenna at different angles and polarizations. The HFMP-230 allows you to "fingerprint" these signals:

  • Ground-Wave Detection (Local): If a signal is significantly stronger on the V1 (Vertical) port and nearly non-existent on H1/H2, it is likely a local ground-wave transmission (0–50 km). This indicates the target is in the immediate tactical vicinity.
  • NVIS Identification (Regional): If the signal is strongest on H1 or H2 and weak on V1, it is a high-angle Near Vertical Incidence Skywave. This places the transmitter in the regional "umbrella" zone (50–500 km).
  • Long-Distance Skywave (DX): Signals arriving from 1,000+ km away often have rotated polarization. A balanced signal across all three ports suggests a long-haul skip, where Polarization Diversity Combining is required to maintain a stable intercept.

2. Polarization Diversity & Fading Mitigation

HF signals suffer from "selective fading" caused by the ionospheric medium. As the signal polarization rotates, a single-wire antenna will experience deep "nulls" where the signal completely disappears for several seconds.

  • The Triple-Port Solution: By feeding V1, H1, and H2 into a multi-channel Software Defined Radio (SDR), the system can perform Spatial and Polarization Diversity.
  • Signal Reconstruction: When the signal "fades" on the vertical plane, it almost always "peaks" on the horizontal plane. The HFMP-230 ensures that your SIGINT system never loses the "lock" on a high-priority target during these rotation cycles.

3. Azimuthal Ambiguity Resolution

At frequencies above 12 MHz, the horizontal dipoles transition from an omnidirectional to a bi-directional (Figure-8) pattern.

  • Criss-Cross Analysis: Because H1 and H2 are mounted at a 90-degree angle to each other, their "nulls" and "peaks" are offset.
  • Directional Hinting: By comparing the ratio of H1 vs. H2, an automated SIGINT suite can estimate the approximate arrival azimuth of the signal. While not a replacement for a full Direction Finding (DF) array, it provides critical "sector awareness" that single-port antennas cannot offer.

4. Low-Noise Monitoring for Weak Signal Intercept

The HFMP-230 is a fully passive antenna, which is a major advantage for high-sensitivity monitoring.

  • Zero Intermodulation: Active antennas use internal amplifiers that can create "phantom signals" (intermodulation products) when exposed to strong local transmitters. The HFMP-230 has a clean, linear response, ensuring that the weak signals you are looking for aren't buried under internally generated noise.
  • D.C. Grounded Shielding: The integrated D.C. ground path bleeds off atmospheric static. This lowers the "Noise Floor" of your monitoring station, allowing you to "hear" signals that are just a few decibels above the thermal noise limit.

SIGINT Site Deployment Checklist

  • Port Labeling: Ensure the coaxial runs are clearly marked V1, H1, and H2 at the receiver end. Reversing these will lead to incorrect propagation mode analysis.
  • Coaxial Phase Matching: For advanced diversity combining, use identical lengths of high-quality coaxial cable (e.g., LMR-400) for all three ports. This ensures the phase relationship between the vertical and horizontal components is preserved.
  • Mast Verticality: The 11-meter mast must be perfectly vertical. A lean of even 5 degrees can cause "cross-polarization leakage," where the vertical port starts picking up horizontal components, degrading your mode-identification accuracy.
  • Environmental Maintenance: Periodically check the Delrin and Teflon insulators for carbon tracking or salt buildup. Even a passive antenna needs clean insulators to maintain the high-impedance "quietness" required for SIGINT.
