- Directional Guidance: The overlapping area of the two signals creates an on-track (centerline) signal. The aircraft's onboard receiver measures the difference in the depth of modulation (DDM) between the 90 Hz and 150 Hz tones to determine its horizontal deviation from the runway centerline.
- Horizontal Polarization: The use of horizontal polarization helps to minimize interference and electrical noise from local ground-based sources compared to vertical polarization.
Omnidirectional Horizontal Polarized Loop ILS Antenna ILS-108-118-L:
Operates in the 108-112/118MHz band for VOR/DVOR applications. It features a rugged ABS radome and requires no field tuning. The antenna transmits two overlapping; horizontally polarized signals modulated at different audio frequencies: 90 Hz and 150 Hz.
Omnidirectional Horizontal Polarized Localizer Dipole ILS Antenna LC-DP-110:
VHF localizer dipole antennas are specialized ground-based systems operating in the 108 to 112 MHz frequency range to provide horizontal guidance for aircraft during landing. These are generally part of a larger Instrument Landing System (ILS)
- Frequency Range: Localizer dipole antenna operates in the VHF band, specifically between 108 and 112 MHz band.
- Location: The localizer dipole antenna array is located on the ground at the opposite end of the runway from the approaching aircraft, in line with the extended centerline. It is also used on drone to calibrate the runway.
- Operation: The system transmits two signals modulated at different frequencies (90 Hz and 150 Hz) to create a specific signal pattern. An aircraft's receiver compares the strength of these signals; if the 90 Hz signal is stronger, the aircraft is to the left of the centerline, and if the 150 Hz signal is stronger, it is to the right.
- Polarization: The signals transmitted by the ground localizer antenna are horizontally polarized
Omnidirectional Horizontal Polarized Localizer Butterfly ILS Antenna LC-BF-110:
A VHF localizer antenna is an essential part of an aircraft's Instrument Landing System (ILS), providing crucial lateral guidance to align the aircraft with the runway centerline during approach and landing. The primary function of the VHF localizer antenna is to receive specific radio signals transmitted from an antenna array located at the far end of the runway.
- Signal Reception: The antenna receives VHF signals in the frequency range of 108 to 112 MHz. These ground-based signals have two overlapping modulation frequencies, 90 Hz and 150 Hz.
- Lateral Guidance: The aircraft's receiver compares the strength (depth of modulation) of these two signals. If the signals are equal (zero difference in depth of modulation), the aircraft is precisely on the runway centerline. It is also used on drone to calibrate the runway.
- Cockpit Display: Any deviation from the centerline is displayed on the pilot's cockpit instruments, allowing the pilot to make timely corrections and maintain the correct approach path, which is particularly vital in low-visibility conditions
Distance Measuring Equipment (DME) Antennas for ILS:
Specialized for ground-to-air line-of-sight communication across the 960-1240MHz band. Antenna Experts DME antenna are broadband antenna which cover the entire 960-1240MHz DME band with 6dBi omni gain, 9dBi omni gain and 12dBi omni gain.
- Omnidirectional: DME Antenna available in 6dBi, 9dBi, and 12dBi gain omni configurations sealed in fiberglass radome to make them 100% weatherproof.
- Directional/Sector: DME directional antenna features 180-degree horizontal beamwidths with gain options of 8dBi, 11dBi, and 14dBi sealed in fiberglass radome to make them 100% weatherproof.
Broadband Aeronautical Antennas for ILS:
Antenna Experts also produces world-leading wideband antennas covering the entire VHF/UHF aeronautical band 100-400MHz in both omni-directional and directional patterns for ATC applications.
Localizer ILS Antennas:
Localizer (LOC) antennas are located at the opposite end of the runway from the approach threshold, aligned with the centerline. They transmit two overlapping Very High Frequency (VHF) signals between 108 and 112 MHz to provide lateral (left/right) guidance to the pilot.
- Function: Localizer antenna is used to align the aircraft with the runway centerline.
- Signal Type: All ILS antenna used horizontal polarization.
- Antenna Types: Common types include half wave dipole, loop, butterfly and collinear type for omnidirectional requirement and yagi and log periodic for directional requirements.
- Location: ILS antenna situated on the ground, centered at the far end of the runway. Alos used on drone for calibration of runway.
Glide Slope ILS Antennas:
Glide Slope (GS) antennas are located approximately 750 to 1,250 feet down the runway from the threshold, offset from the centerline. They transmit two overlapping Ultra High Frequency (UHF) signals between 328 and 336 MHz to provide vertical (up/down) guidance, typically creating a 3-degree descent path.
- Function: ILS glide slop antenna used to guide the aircraft down the correct vertical descent path to the touchdown point.
- Signal Type: ILS glide slop antenna Linear horizontal polarization.
- Antenna Types: ILS glide slop antenna often use a corner reflector design, such as the Antenna Experts model GS-328-336-10 which has 10 dBi directional gain.
- Location: ILS glide slop antenna positioned to the side of the runway near the approach end.
Marker Beacon ILS Antennas:
While less common now due to replacement by Distance Measuring Equipment (DME), marker beacons use ground antennas that transmit a vertical, fan-shaped beam on a single frequency of 75 MHz to provide range information at specific points along the approach path.
- Outer Marker (OM): Located 3.5 to 6 nautical miles from the threshold to provide a positive position fix on the localizer.
- Middle Marker (MM): Located approximately 0.5 to 0.8 nautical miles from the threshold, crossing the glide slope at about 200-250 feet above the runway.
- Inner Marker (IM): Used for Category II or III operations, located closer to the runway threshold.
