VHF Ground-Wave Propagation Guide: Tactical Range with the BVM-20-100

In the 20–100 MHz band, communication typically relies on Ground-Wave Propagation. Unlike higher frequencies that act like "beams of light," these lower-frequency VHF signals follow the curvature of the Earth and "bend" over hills and through valleys. The BVM-20-100 is specifically designed to maximize this effect for SINCGARS and tactical FM radios.

1. The "Bending" Advantage in Hilly Terrain

At 30 MHz (low-band VHF), the wavelength is approximately 10 meters long. These long waves are capable of Diffraction, meaning they can spill over the crest of a hill and reach a vehicle hidden in the "RF Shadow" on the other side.

  • Biconical Spring Flex: Periodically clean the biconical spring of mud. If the spring is "caked" and becomes rigid, the mechanical stress of a high-speed impact will be transferred directly to the ABS radome, potentially causing a structural failure.
